How to get to Mal Pais
Take the direct bus from the Coca Cola bus terminal in San Jose to Mal Pais. The journey takes 5 hours and costs around 12 bucks. Contact us for the current bus schedule.
An own vehicle is recommended for El Nido de Aguila. An ATV is best suited for the area and is a big fun to drive. We will gladly assist you to rent an ATV for the day or week.
From San Jose drive on the newly built highway via Santa Ana to Calderas and on to the port town of Puntarenas (1 1/2 hours). Board the ferry to Paquera and cross the Gulf of Nicoya (1 1/2 hours). Once in Paquera drive towards Tambor and then Cobano. Continue straight in Cobano and after 2 km take a left towards Mal Pais and Santa Teresa (1 hour).
After 10 km You arrive at the road intersection (El Cruze) Santa Teresa /Mal Pais where you turn to the left and drive 2 km until you arrive at the radio tower of the local phone company (ICE). Right at the side of the ICE tower a road goes uphill. You pass by Hotel Vista de Olas and continue for another 600 m up the hill until you arrive at El Nido de Aguila. A 4x4 is required to get to the property from the main road.
Advice: Roads in Costa Rica are generally in poor shape and on the Nicoya Peninsula they are - to put it mildly - even more adventurous than in the rest of the country. Most roads are unpaved, so a 4x4 is recommended. Avoid driving at night as you might encounter unexpected hazards.
